The BGD Epic is a series of low-end EN-B paragliders designed by Bruce Goldsmith Design (BGD), specifically aimed at pilots transitioning from flight school to their first cross-country (XC) flights.
Models in the Series
Epic 2 (Current Model): Released in 2022, it features an increased aspect ratio of 5.2 and 45 cells for improved glide and speed (+1 km/h trim, +3 km/h top speed) compared to the original.
Epic Freestyle: A specialized version designed for SIV (Simulation d’Incident en Vol) and learning entry-level acro maneuvers. It utilizes stronger lines and attachment points while maintaining the same 5.0 aspect ratio as the original Epic.
Echo / Echo 2: The lightweight versions of the Epic series, optimized for hike-and-fly and travel.
Epic 2 Motor: A hybrid version equipped with specific risers for paramotoring.
Key Technical Features
Progressive Stability: Designed with a solid center and progressively softer wingtips to give the pilot “Eyes Wide Open” feedback, allowing them to feel and avoid turbulence.
Chord Cut Billow (CCB): Uses 3D panel shaping on the leading edge to reduce wrinkles and improve the rib profile’s stability.
B/C Steering: The Epic 2 includes a rear-riser steering system that allows pilots to control the wing efficiently while using the speed bar.
Snap Locks: Magnetic brake clips that only release when pulled downward, preventing accidental detachment during kiting or maneuvers.
Performance Characteristics
The series is known for its forgiving handling and high passive safety. It is particularly noted for its “impeccable” spiral behavior—highly resistant to staying locked in a spiral—which is a critical safety bonus for entry-level pilots. Detailed technical data and manuals can be found on the Bruce Goldsmith Design website.
